How to Make Sure Your Hat is Your Crowning Glory

Fantastic headwear is the perfect finishing touch to a special occasion outfit whether for a wedding, a day at the races or a garden party or any other occasion.   Finding the perfect hat can be difficult although it really doesn't need to be and at THE HAT THING we can help you find the right hat for you to make you look, and feel, extra special.

Where do I start?  Shape and colour are two key elements to consider when choosing a hat.
Firstly, y
our hat needs to work with the shape of your face and your hair style.  It should be in proportion to your body, and unless you're going to the races and want to make a big impact make sure it isn't wider than your shoulders!  Secondly, the colour is key.  Whilst it's often tempting to try and match your outfit, we suggest picking an accent colour from your outfit or a different shade that you can bring through in your accessories.  We also offer a bespoke trimming service so the addition of feathers or other adornments can really

Tradition or fashion?  Hats are a stunning way to finish off an outfit but fascinators and saucers (I like to call them hatinators) are a great alternative.  Fascinators are also great if you have short hair as they can be secured by a thin headband or held in place by an elastic band that can be hidden under your hair.  Some fascinators are small and more delicate than hats with a crown and brim they’ll also leave more of your hair on show. However, we have traditional hats as well as hatinators and fascinators to suit all types.

Mother of the Bride or Groom.  On this most special of days you need to make sure that your choice of headgear is not so large that it hides your face in the photos or casts dark shadows across your face that will age you.  A fascinator or headpiece will not only be comfortable to wear all day and you won’t be left with hat hair if you decide to remove it to do some dancing!  If you opt for a more traditional style hat then make sure that the shape complements the lines of your outfit.  You can always have a smaller fascinator to wear once the dancing starts!  Oh, and did we say hat hair?  Make that a thing of the past by carrying a small pot of gel or mouse and a comb.  We can show you how.

Day at the Races.  There are so many options - and for Royal Ascot as long as you follow the rules if you're in the Royal or Queen Anne Enclosures, you can really push the boat out. We have some amazing hats which really make a statement and help you stand out from the crowd.  If you feel that a full blown hat is too much then a hatinator or percher which is more tailored and therefore formal than a fascinator but are very easy to wear.
